Super Storm Sandy Update

Although we continually read and hear the heartbreaking stories, and see the pictures of Sandy's devastation, we don't hear much about the animals and how they fared. However, our pets feel the same fears and anguish that we do. Not only do they feel stress and anxiety about living in the cold and dark, some losing their home and being displaced to unfamiliar surroundings, they also feed off our emotions and sense when we are stressed and upset.

Having lost power ourselves, Dr. Ann and I had to board our own dogs for several days. It was very difficult to leave them at the end of the day and not have them home with us. However, we knew it was best for them, as they couldn't understand the situation. When power and heat were restored to our home, they were so elated to return home and sleep in their own bed.

At Essex Animal Hospital, we are here to help in any way we can. If you need to board your pets with us for a few days, please let us know. If your pets are properly vaccinated, we can board them at a moment's notice. (Unfortunately, for the safety of your pet, as well as other pets, we cannot board unvaccinated animals.)

If you believe your pet is feeling overwhelming stress and anxiety, we can sometimes prescribe medication that will get them through the difficult days ahead.

Please let us know how we can help.
