Flea Outbreak, October 10, 2012

We are currently in a major flea outbreak. We are seeing several cases a day of dogs and cats infested with fleas. Not only do these fleas make your pets miserable (even if they don't show it), they may transmit tapeworms, infest your home, and even bite people. If your pet is scratching, itching, or licking themselves excessively, or if they have unexplained hair loss or sores on their skin, they may already be infested with fleas.

If you suspect your pet already has fleas, please call to schedule and appointment so we can effectively and safely take care of the problem. If your pet doesn't have fleas, we strongly recommend preventive flea measures so your pet, and your home, do not become infested.

In dogs, we recommend Vectra 3D. This once-a-month product will prevent and repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, sand flies, mites, and lice. In cats, we recommend Revolution. This once-a-month product will protect against fleas, as well as heartworms, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms. Because of the milder winters in recent years, we recommend protection for your pet year round.

As the weather gets cooler, we anticipate a resurgence of ticks. Ticks can transmit many diseases, including Lyme Disease, that can make your pet very sick. Vectra 3D is also an excellent method to prevent ticks.

Please let us know if you have questions about how to treat and prevent fleas and ticks in your pets.
